National Dental Hygiene Month allows organizations like the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) and Colgate to promote dental hygiene. Of course, you should take excellent care of your teeth every month, but October is your yearly reminder to see your St. Augustine dentist and hygienist every six months for a healthy smile.

Dental Hygiene Is Always a Collaborative Effort

Dental hygiene is a collaborative effort between you and your dental hygienist. Every six months, you should visit your hygienist for professional teeth cleanings. These visits get rid of stubborn tartar and bacteria. Your hygienist can also provide tips for at-home care and product recommendations, such as dental rinses.

However, between checkups and teeth cleanings, we encourage you to brush and floss your teeth at least twice daily and always before bed.

Excellent Oral Hygiene and Overall Wellness

Oral hygiene is crucial to your long-term oral health but also plays a significant role in whole-body wellness.

For example, lack of dental care and hygiene can lead to gum disease, which puts you at risk for tooth loss. Other complications of undiagnosed and untreated gum disease include:

  • Heart and lung problems
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Diabetes

Regular checkups and teeth cleanings make you far less likely to develop tooth decay, oral infections, and gum disease.

October Is Also the Month for Candy and Halloween Treats
