Dentistry aims to ensure that the patient's teeth and gums are (and remain) healthy. That's an incredibly obvious and simplistic statement, but it's a fact. Having a bright, beautiful smile only matters as long as that smile is, well, healthy.

Today, we're setting aside the deeper dives into the various preventive, corrective, restorative, and cosmetic treatments that comprise dentistry and keeping it simple with a half-dozen simple but vitally important ways to keep your teeth healthy.

Best Practices for Healthy Teeth

Here is our list of six "best practices" to ensure the health of your teeth and gums:

  1. Brush frequently and adequately. Brushing your teeth twice a day using fluoride toothpaste is a must, plain and simple. When brushing, gently angle the brush toward your gums and use smooth, circular motions. Remember, brushing harder will not get your teeth and gums cleaner!
  2. Floss regularly. Flossing daily removes plaque and food particles between teeth that brushing can't reach, helping to prevent bad breath, cavities, and the bacteria that cause gum disease.
  3. Use mouthwash: Regularly using an antibacterial mouthwash eliminates the bacteria that cause bad breath and gum disease.
  4. Limit sugary and acidic foods. Foods and beverages that are overly sugary contribute to plaque and tartar buildup, while those that are highly acidic can erode tooth enamel.
  5. Visit your dentist regularly. Two yearly dental check-ups ensure not only the removal of plaque and tartar from your teeth and gumline but also allow your dentist to identify minor issues and provide preventive care long before they become serious problems.
  6. Protect your teeth from trauma. If you grind your teeth at night or play contact sports, a mouthguard will protect your teeth from injury or excessive wear.
